Mavs Sign 2 to National Letters

The Mavericks have signed two high school standouts to national letters of intent to attend UNO next fall and play golf, head coach Tim Nelson has announced. The two newest recruits for Nelson and the Mavs are Lindsay Newton, from North Platte, and Kearney native Kate O'Dea.
Newton, the daughter of Rich and Denise Newton, was a four-year letterwinner at North Platte High School under coach Carol Sandau. She was a state meet qualifier as a junior and senior and won the district individual title as a junior with a 78. Her stroke average as a senior was 82. Newton is also a member of the National Honor Society and has been on the honor roll four straight years.
O'Dea is the daughter of Tim and Peggy O'Dea. She was a four-year letterwinner under coach Bill Becker at Kearney High School and placed third in the district meet and seventh in the state tournament as a senior this fall. She also finished fifth in the conference meet. Last summer, she won the Kearney Junior Golf Classic, shooting an 84-81--165.
The Mavs won their second straight North Central Conference title this fall and Nelson was named the NCC's women's coach of the year in his first season.
