Denbeck Named Associate Athletic Director

Deb Denbeck has been named the associate athletic director and senior women's administrator at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the school's director of athletics, Bob Danenhauer, said today. The appointment is subject to approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
Denbeck is currently the associate athletic director and head volleyball coach at Southwest Minnesota State University. She replaces Cherri Mankenberg, who will retire June 30 after 27 years as a coach and administrator at UNO.
"Deb brings a wealth of experience as a coach and administrator to our program," Danenhauer said. "She also has a strong background in fund raising activities which is very important as well."
Denbeck, a native of O'Neill, Neb., will begin her duties at UNO on August 1.
"I'm really excited about this opportunity," Denbeck said. "I'm very excited about working with the staff at UNO."
Denbeck said that it was a "tought decision to leave the coaching profession, but at the same time I know that I'm leaving a very good team and a great, supportive administrative staff that will do the right things for the volleyball team. This was just too great of an opportunity for me to pass up."
Among Denbeck's responsibilities at UNO will be supervising the UNO/Diet Pepsi Women's Walk, which raised over $215,000 last year and has accounted for over $2 million in donations in its 18 years.
Denbeck, a 1977 University of Nebraska graduate, earned her master's degree in 1982 from Western Illinois University. She has been the head volleyball coach at Southwest Minnesota State since 1986 and the school's associate athletic director since 2000. She also was the women's athletic director from 1986-93 and the head softball coach in 1993-94.
Denbeck was the head volleyball and softball coach at College of St. Mary in Omaha. She held the volleyball post from 1982-86 and the softball position from 1983-86. In 1986, she was named the Omaha World-Herald's state college coach of the year. Earlier this year, she was inducted into the College of St. Mary Athletic Hall of Fame.
After receiving her bachelor's degree, Denbeck spent a year in graduate studies at the University of Oregon, then served an internship at Creighton University in 1979-80 where she was an administrative assistant with the women's volleyball program and an assistant softball coach as well as being the women's sports information director.
She also served as a substitute teacher and adult education instructor for O'Neill, Neb., Public Schools in 1979-80.
Denbeck was a graduate assistant in the women's athletic department at Western Illinois University in 1977-78 and 1981-82 and also served as the women's golf coach in the spring of 1979.
She joined the College of St. Mary athletic staff in 1982.
Denbeck has participated in numerous conference and national committees and association as well as being a guest lecturer and clinician at volleyball camps.
At Southwest Minnesota State, her duties have included corporate fund raising, event promotions and marketing and as the chair for the school's women's walk-a-thon, which was patterned after the UNO/Diet Pepsi Women's Walk. She currently also is the chair of the North Central Region Volleyball Committee.
