OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha women's swimming and diving team placed first in 14 out of 16 events as the Mavericks opened the 2004-05 season with a 219-68 dual win over NCAA Division I South Dakota State Saturday afternoon, Oct. 23, at UNO's HPER swimming pool.
Senior Veronica Barna, and juniors Courtney Petersen, Jamie Grogan, and Ashley Renshaw each won two events to pace the Mavericks to victory.
Barna won the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:10.06) and the 100 yard butterly (1:04.15).
Petersen placed first in 200 yard butterly (2:15.02) and 500 yard freestyle (5:16.55).
Grogan won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Her score of 270.10 in the one-meter diving was an automatic qualifying mark for NCAA II Nationals.
Renshaw was first in the 200 year breasstroke (2:26.54) and 200 yard individual medley (2:15.13).
Joining Grogran with an automatic qualifying mark for nationals was senior Sarah Clark, who won the 50 yard freestyle in a national qualifying time of 24.10.
Head Coach Todd Samland was very excited about the team's finish Saturday. "There were a lot of really good swims today, and I am really proud of the finishes. The freshmen made lifetime best swims right off the bat," Samland said.
The Mavericks are off next week but will head to Kirksville, Mo. in two weeks to take part in the Truman State Invite on Nov. 5-6.
