David Herbster Named UNO Athletic Director

David Herbster has been selected as the new director of athletics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and will assume his duties on January 1, Chancellor Nancy Belck announced today. The appointment is subject to approval by the University's Board of Regents.
Herbster will meet the staff and the media at a news conference scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m. at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse.
"David has achieved success at both the NCAA Division I and II levels, and we think his innovative ideas, energy and leadership will equip Maverick athletics with the tools needed to meet the challenges ahead," said UNO Chancellor Nancy Belck.
Herbster, the athletic director at Concordia University of St. Paul, Minn., replaces Bob Danenhauer, who announced his resignation in August after serving seven years as the athletic director. Bill Wakefield, UNO's faculty representative to the NCAA, has been serving as the interim athletic director since October.
"UNO has an excellent athletic program and is in an outstanding community," Herbster said. "I'm excited about having the opportunity to lead the program."
Herbster earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Tech. He has been at Concordia University for over three years, serving from 2001-2002 as associate athletic director and from June 2002 to the present as the director of athletics. Concordia, an NCAA Division II school in the Northern Sun Conference, has won five conference titles over the past two years and has been represented in several national tournaments and post-season play.
Herbster served as the promotions coordinator at Virginia Tech from 1992-94 before moving on to become the assistant director of marketing and promotions at North Dakota State from 1994-95. He then was the assistant athletic director for marketing and development at Pittsburg State from 1995-98. He then spent three years working for the Special Olympics of Minnesota, first as sports program manager and later as the director of special events and promotions before joining the athletic program at Concordia University.
As an athlete, Herbster played basketball at Virginia Tech from 1987-91 and was the team captain as a senior.
