Mavs Finish Second, Sweep NCC Honors

GRAND FORKS, N.D.- The Mavs took home NCC swimmer and diver of the year honors Saturday and Todd Samland was named coach of the year as the Mavs finished second at the North Central Conference championship behind host North Dakota. Ashley Renshaw was named swimmer of the year after winning the 200 yard breastroke, her third victory of the championship, and Jamie Grogan, 1 meter champ, shared the diving award with UND's Jenna Portelance.
The Mavs tallied 748 points for their third straight second-place finish while UND won its 23rd title in a row with 965 points. St. Cloud State finished third.
Along with Renshaw, Stacy Crook picked up a win Saturday with a time of :52.43 in the 100 yard freestyle. Beth Hempleman finished second in the 200 yard butterfly.
The Mavs will head to Buffalo, N.Y. for the NCAA championships March 10-13. Last year the Mavs finished ninth.

Mavs Win Three Events, Second After Day Three
GRAND FORKS, N.D.- The Mavs won three events Friday and finished second in four of the other five to maintain the second-place spot in the third day of the North Central Conference swimming and diving championships. North Dakota pulled ahead of the pack, now leading with 734 points. The Mavs tallied 542 and are edging St. Cloud State by 154.
Highlighting the day for the Mavs was the 400 yard individual medley. The Mavs took the top three spots with Ashley Renshaw finishing first, Beth Hempleman second and Veronica Barna third. Renshaw's and Hempleman's times were national qualifying marks. Jamie Grogan won the 1 meter dive with a score of 392.70 and Renshaw won her second 100 breast stroke title with a 1:06.52 time.
The Mav's 400 yard medley relay team of Renshaw, Vanessa Fleguel, Martina Zamecnik and Stacy Crook took second. The 200 yard freestyle team of Zamecnik, Sarah Clark, Bridgette Schram and Lisa Wemhoff also took second with a national qualifying time of 1:36.77. Zamecnik finished second in the 100 yard butterfly and Veronica Barna took second in the 200 yard freestyle. In the 100 yard backstroke Fleguel finished ninth.
With five events scheduled for Saturday, the final day of competition, the Mavs will have their hands full if they want to upend 14-time NCC champ North Dakota. Action will begin with preliminaries in the morning at Hyslop Pool with finals taking place in the afternoon.

GRAND FORKS, N.D.- Sarah Clark took first Thursday in the 50 freestyle with an NCAA qualifying time of 23.72 and the University of Nebraska-Omaha finished the second day of the North Central Conference swimming and diving championships in second place behind defending champ and host North Dakota. The Fighting Sioux, winners of six of eight events so far, tallied 326 points and the Mavs took in 260, 68 ahead of third-place South Dakota.
Also taking first for the Mavs was the 200 medley relay team of Clark, Vanessa Fleguel, Martina Zamecnik and Ashley Renshaw with a time of 1:48.52. Renshaw grabbed second place in the 200 individual medley at 2:08.10, also a qualifying time. Beth Hempelman finished third with a B-cut time. Veronica Barna's B-cut time of 5:05.92 was good enough for second in the 500 freestyle.

Crook Finishes Fifth in 1000 Freestyle
GRAND FORKS, N.D.- Maverick swimmer Stacy Crook finished fifth Wednesday night in the 1000 yard freestyle finals during the first day of the North Central Conference women's swimming and diving championships, hosted by North Dakota. Crook's time of 10:43.14 was ten seconds off the leader, UND's Lauren Mickelson. Megan Jamieson finished seventh for UNO. Jamie Grogan finished 11th in the three meter diving preliminary round with a score of 149.15 in the only other event scheduled for Wednesday. The NCC meet will last through Saturday with action resuming Thursday with five preliminaries.
