Olympian Finch to Speak at UNO

Jennie Finch, who pitched the U.S. softball team to the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics, will be the featured speaker at the March 9 Diet Pepsi/UNO Women's Walk Luncheon.
The 11:30 a.m. event, which is open to the public, will be at the Doubletree Hotel, 16th and Dodge Streets. Tickets are $55 per person or $500 for a table of 10. Reservations may be made through the UNO Athletic Department, 554-2305.
"This is a very special attraction for our 20th annual women's walk," UNO Associate Athletic Director Deb Denbeck said. "I think it's appropriate to have a world-class athlete such as Jennie associated with what has become a world-class event for women's athletics."
Finch was a three-time first-team All-American at the University of Arizona where she set an NCAA record with 60 consecutive wins. She led the Wildcats to one national title and a runner-up finish and was named the Honda Award winner as the nation's top softball player twice. In 2002, she was a finalist for the ESPY Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year.
The Diet Pepsi/UNO Women's Walk, which this year will be held on Saturday, April 16 on the UNO campus, is the largest and oldest event of its kind in the nation. Proceeds from the walk support the scholarship program for UNO's women athletes.
Last year's Walk raised over $200,000, bringing the total for the event to over $2.3 million in 19 years. The event attracts over 1,000 walkers each year.
