Sigman, Kyvelidou are Athletes of the Year

Three-time national wrestling champion Les Sigman and Anastasia Kyvelidou, a two-event national track champion, are the 2004-05 University of Nebraska at Omaha athletes of the year. The duo, selected by a panel of area sportswriters and sportscasters, will be honored at the 30th annual UNO Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
Tickets for the event at the Holiday Convention Centre, 72nd and Grover Streets, are $50 each or $500 for a table of 10 and may be ordered through the UNO Athletic Department at 554-2506. The banquet will begin at 6 p.m. with a social hour, followed by dinner at 7 and the induction program beginning at 8 p.m.
The event will feature the induction of three former All-Americans into the Hall of Fame, including Carri Butler Hutcherson, who earned All-American honors 16 times during her track and field career; Pat Kelley III, who was a three-time wrestling All-American, and Tanya Cate, volleyball All-American, who helped lead the Mavs to the 1996 national title.
Kyvelidou (pronounced Key-VAHL-uh-doo) was named the NCAA II female track athlete of the year by the national track coaches association. She won the national indoor triple jump title and the national outdoor heptahlon last winter and spring. She also finished second in the indoor long jump. Her heptathlon score of 5,780 ranks as the fourth-best all-time in NCAA Division II and eighth on the world list. The native of Greece competed for the Greek national team in the European Cup in Finland last summer. Kyvelidou, a senior in 2004-05, set seven school records last year for the Mavericks and won three indoor titles in the North Central Conference meet in addition to the outdoor heptathlon title, but an injury kept her from competing in the NCC outdoor meet.
Sigman, a native of Sturgis, S.D., recorded a 51-3 overall record and won eight of nine tournaments last season. He capped his year with his third straight heavyweight championship in the NCAA II tournament, which was held at UNO. The win helped the Mavericks win their second consecutive team title. Sigman, who will carry a 132-7 record into his senior season, has not allowed an offensive point in a national championship match in his career. In the 2004 national meet his win vaulted UNO past North Dakota State to the team championship.
