Mavs Have Solid Showing at Season Opener

VERMILLION, S.D.--The Nebraska-Omaha women's track & field team turned in an impressive showing at the USD/Derek Miles Open at the DakotaDome on Thursday. The Maverick women tied for a meet-high 45 points with host South Dakota at the eight-team meet.
The Mavs won three individual events and had a total of 13 top three finishes. Freshman Molly Belling and junior Laverne Monger traded places in the 60 and 200 meter races. Belling won the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.61 while Monger finished second. Monger then captured the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.99, while Belling was clocked at the same time but had a slower preliminary time.
Senior Foluso Makinde, the reigning NCAA II indoor champion in the long jump, won Thursday's event with a leap of 18-8 3/4.
Thursday's meet was UNO's lone competition before the spring semester. The Mavericks will return to action Jan. 6 when they compete at the Kansas State Invite in Manhattan, Kan.
