Mavs Erase North Dakota Streak, win NCC
Feb 19, 2005 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Throughout the final day of the North Central Conference Championships, UNO trailed North Dakota and little by little chipped away and overtook the Fighting Sioux as the Mavs closed the book on a 23-year reign.
Senior Veronica Barna started Saturday's finals with a first place finish in the mile (1650 freestyle) with a time of 17:45.81.
Freshman Jessica Hessel finished with a clutch performance in the 200-yard butterfly setting a new conference record, logging a time of 2:07.58 sealing the UNO victory. In the last final of the evening the women's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Molly Connolly, Sarah Clark, Lisa Wemhoff, and Veronica Barna, finished third scoring enough points to secure the 19.5 point victory over the Sioux.
The final day of the NCC Championships finished with more NCC record-breaking times. Rodrigo Ferreira of North Dakota recorded a time of 44.84 in the men's 100-yard freestyle. Both the men's and women's 400-yard freestyle relay records were eclipsed as the North Dakota men finished with a time of 3:03.37 while St. Cloud State logged a time of 3:30.56 for the women.
