Makinde Wins High Jump; Mavs in 2nd

Foluso Makinde and Debbie Akerly finished 1-2 in the long jump Friday to help the Mavericks move into second place after the first day of the North Central Conference Track and Field Meet at Burke Stadium. UNO tallied 30 points in the final two events.
Makinde jumped 19 feet, 11 inches to capture the event and Akerly recorded a leap of 18-8. Kalyn Byers finished seventh with a mark of 17-9, giving the Mavericks 20 points in the event. Byers also finished third in the high jump Friday with a mark of 5-5 1/2.
In the 10,000-meter run, the final event of the day, UNO scored 10 points as Kellie Ryan finished third with a time of 38:39.66, Kaylen Harris sixth and Allison Gorman eighth. Minnesota Duluth's Erin Foss won with a time of 37:47.81.
Minnesota State leads the team race after seven events with 84 points to UNO's 59. The meet concludes on Saturday, with field events beginning at 9 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m.
The Mavericks came into Friday's action with 23 points after placing four athletes in the heptahlon, held last week. Akerly was second, Byers fifth and Julie Gass eighth in that event. However, the champion, Anastasia Kyvelidou, was scratched Thursday after suffering a hamstring injury in practice.
