
Akerly Wins Twice, Helps Mavs to 2nd

Debbie Akerly captured a pair of titles and the 4x100 meter relay team garnered another first Saturday to help the Mavericks finish second in the North Central Conference women's track and field meet at Burke Stadium.
UNO finished with 163 points in the meet behind champion South Dakota's 202. Minnesota State, North Dakota, Augustana, Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State followed in order.
Akerly, a junior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.21 seconds and then captured the triple jump title with a leap of 39 feet, 4 1/2 inches, just ahead of teammate Taira Baker's 38-11 3/4. Both are provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA II national meet May 26-28 in Abilene, Tex.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Laverne Monger, Ashley Freeman, Foluso Makinde and Akerly led off the Saturday running events with a win in a time of 47.50 seconds.
Monger finihsed second in the 100 meter dash and third in the 200 meters. Akerly was also third in the 100 meter dash.
In all on Saturday, the Mavs placed 20 times in 15 events.
