Kyvelidou, Mavs Headed to National Meet

The Nebraska-Omaha track and field team continues preparations for the NCAA II National Championships in Abilene, Texas on May 26-28.
UNO will send five student-athletes to the national meet and look to continue a banner year for the program. The Mavs finished with a best-ever finish (5th place) at the NCAA II Indoor National Championships back in March. Nebraska-Omaha hosted the North Central Conference Championships two weeks ago at Burke Stadium and finished with a second place team finish.
US Track and Field Coaches Association Athlete of the Year, Anastasia Kyvelidou will lead the group of student-athletes by participating in four different events. Kyvelidou, a senior from Edessa, Greece, will compete in the heptathlon, triple jump, javelin throw and the 100-meter hurdles. Kyvelidou was scratched from the conference Championships two weeks ago after suffering a hamstring injury in practice.
Kalyn Byers, a senior from Clarinda, Iowa, and junior Debbie Akerly (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) will also compete in the heptathlon. Akerly will also join Kyvelidou in the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump.
Foluso Makinde, a junior from Ipetumodu, Nigeria, will compete in the long jump. Taira Baker, a senior from Columbus, will take part in the triple jump.
