Kyvelidou Takes NCAA Heptathlon Crown

ABILENE, TX -- Nebraska-Omaha senior Anastasia Kyvelidou was crowned a national champion Friday afternoon after capturing the heptathlon at the NCAA II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Kyvelidou, a native of Edessa, Greece, trailed Seattle Pacific's Danielle Ayers-Stamper by 69 points heading into today's final three heptathlon events. Kyvelidou took the lead in the competition after winning the long jump (19-11) and javelin (148-11), separating herself from Ayers-Stamper by 149 points with just one event left. Kyvelidou then clinched the individual title with a third place finish in the 200-meter dash (25.30).
Kyvelidou finished with 5,780 points, which shatters her own school record of 5,512 points. SPU's Ayers-Stamper finished second with 5,606 points while Alissa Miller of Angelo State finished third (5,166 points).
The Mavs' Debbie Akerly, a junior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, finished fifth in the heptathlon with 5,094 points, earning her All-America honors. UNO's Kalyn Byers, a senior from Clarinda, Iowa, placed 11th with 4,688 points.
Kyvelidou and Akerly will run in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries Friday evening. UNO has 22 team points heading into the final day of competition.
