Mavs in National Meet This Week

The Mavericks will make their second trip as a team to the NCAA Division II natonal tournament after winning the North Regional title May 3. The 72-hole tournament will be May 11-14 at the Championship Course at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Rollins is the two-time defending champion. UNO last made a trip to the national meet in 2002, finishing eighth.
Tee Times, Lineup
UNO will send Amanda Stock, Tanis Hastmann, Mandy Houtz, Sara Wolfe and Carly Froehlich to the tournament. The team will play practice rounds May 9-10 before opening play May 11 in the eight-team, 48-player field. The Mavs will tee off at 10 a.m. CDT Wednesday, at 9:10 on Thursday and Friday and Saturday will tee off according to their standing in the tournament.
UNO in the Regionals
The Mavericks edged Minnesota State, Mankato for the North Region title on the second extra hole of a playoff May 3. Senior Tanis Hastmann won her second regional individual championship, shooting a 77-83-82--242 for the tournament. Hastmann also won the title in 2002, leading UNO to its first national tournament appearance. The other UNO scores: Sara Wolfe, 80-87-83--250; Amanda Stock, 86-86-80--252; Carly Froehlich, 84-86-85--255; Amanda Houtz, 81-85-93--259. UNO and Minnesota State tied at the end of the 54-hole meet at 992. Hastmann and Stock each birdied the second extra hole to help the Mavs to the title.
The Coach
Tim Nelson is in his second season as the Mavericks' head coach. Nelson took over the program in June, 2003, after serving one season as the head coach at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. A UNO graduate, he guided the Mavericks to the 2003 North Central Conference title and was named the NCC Coach of the Year.
In the Fall
The Mavericks finished second in the North Central Conference and senior Tanis Hastmann won her fourth-straight individual title in the final fall event Oct. 9-11. Prior to that, the Mavs won two tournaments and finished second once. Hastmann and junior Amanda Stock, who was second in the NCC meet, each were named to the all-North Central Conference team.
