Southwest Minnesota Meet Next for Mavericks

The Mavericks continue their fall campaign Sept. 24 and 25 at the 11-team Southwest Minnesota State Invitational in Marshall, Minn. The Mavs will play 18-holes each day at the Marshall Country Club course, with tee times at noon on Saturday and a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
Last Week: Mavs Capture 2 Titles
The Maverick junior varsity team won the Wayne State Fall Golf Classic Friday by one shot over Winona State's junior varsity squad at the Wayne Country Club, led by Carly Froehlich and Lynn Mulligan, who shared medalist honors with 80s. The varsity team then raced to the Concordia Invitational Title at Brooks Golf Course in Okoboji, Iowa, led by Amanda Stock's second-place 228 total in the 54-hole Saturday-Sunday event. UNO held an 11-stroke edge over second-place Minnesota State in the 11-team tournament. Stock shot an opening round of 73 Saturday and closed on Sunday with rounds of 77 and 78. Winona State's Morgan Proshek shot a closing 72 to win the tournament with a 223 total. UNO's Lindsay Newton tied for fourth with a 74-76-81--231. The Mavericks' opening tram round of 304 was just two shots off the school record of 302 set in 2003.
The Lineup
UNO will send Mandy Houtz, Lindsay Newton, Kate O'Dea, Amanda Stock and Allyson Yung to the Southwest Minnesota State tournament. Carly Froehlich will compete as an individual as well.
Last Year
UNO won two fall tournaments before finishing second in the North Central Conference last October, then won the North Regional in the spring and finished seventh in the NCAA II tournament in May.
The Coach
Tim Nelson is in his third season as the Mavericks' head coach. Nelson took over the program in June, 2003, after serving one season as the head coach at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. A UNO graduate, he guided the Mavericks to the 2003 North Central Conference title and was named the NCC Coach of the Year.
On Deck
The Mavericks will stay close to home,competing in the Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational Oct. 2-3 at Pioneers Golf Course and Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb. That tournament will serve as the final tune-up before the NCC tournament Oct. 8-10.
