Mavericks Gear for NCC Meet Saturday

The Mavericks run for the North Central Conference title this Saturday when they travel to Vermillion, S.D. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. The Mavericks finished third in last year's conference meet, with Tahnee Tuenge leading UNO with a seventh-place finish. South Dakota is the defending champion.
About the Mavericks:
Tahnee Tuenge led UNO in the Coyote Invite, an un-scored meet Oct. 6 in the team's last outing. Kelli Mertes, a sophomore from Brownville, Neb., won her first collegiate meet when she won the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at Pioneers Park in Lincoln Sept. 16. Mertes ran the 6,000-meter course in 23:20.65, leading UNO to a third-place finish in the 22-team College Division of the meet. The Mavericks finished 7th overall, including the five University Division teams competing. Mertes was named the North Central Conference's woman athlete of the week for her performance. Kaylen Harris was seventh in the event. The first week, Harris led UNO with a third-place finish in the UNO/CU Invitational Sept. 6.
The Coach:
Steve Smith took over as the interim head coach for the cross country and track program at UNO Aug. 28 after 19-year coach Tim Hendricks retired. Smith is a 1981 graduate of Pittsburg State and began his coaching career at that school. He has also served as a collegiate assistant at Wichita State and Nebraska. He joined the UNO program as an assistant under Hendricks in January, 2006.

The Mavericks will compete in the Nov. 4 NCAA Division II regional meet in Wayne, Neb.
