Mavs in 3rd After 1st Day of NCC Championships

MANKATO, Minn.--The Nebraska-Omaha women's track team sits in third place after the first day of the North Central Conference Indoor Championships, hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato.
South Dakota leads after one day with 52 points, followed by Augustana (46), UNO (32), St. Cloud State (30), Minnesota State, Mankato (26), North Dakota (25) and Minnesota-Duluth (20).
UNO's Foluso Makinde captured the long jump title with a leap of 19-01 1/2 and the distance medley relay team of Kellie Mertes, Jennifer Victor, Angela Kampschnieder and Sarah Zeisler finished second with a time of 12:28.39.
The Mavs' Kellie Ryan ran the 5000 meter run in 17:52.26, which was good enough for third place. Debbie Akerly also placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 17-09. Julie Gass finished sixth in the women's pentathlon with 3,063 points.
Laverne Monger advanced to Saturday's finals of the 60 meter and 200 meter dashes after finishing first in both heats. Karin Clarkson also advanced to the finals of the 400 meter dash with the fastest time. Sarah Zeisler followed suit with the top time in the 1000 meter run and advanced to the finals.
Finals for the remaining events will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
