Monger Named Outstanding Athlete

Laverne Monger of Nebraska-Omaha and Jim Dilling of Minnesota State have been named the Outstanding Athletes for their efforts at the North Central Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held February 24 & 25 in Mankato, Minn.
Monger, a junior from Omaha, Neb., won the 60-meter dash (:07.64) and the 200-meter dash (:24.80) and was part of the UNO 4x400-meter relay squad that finished second in 3:56..59. All three times are provisional qualifying performances for the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships.
Dilling, a junior from Fond du Lac, Wis., broke an 18-year-old
conference record in the high jump, clearing 7-feet, 4-inches to defeat his
nearest competition by 5 1/2-inches. The 7-1 3/4 mark he broke was set by
former MSU high jumper Mike Fairchild in 1988. The jump is the second
highest in NCAA Division II competition this year and automatically
qualifies him for the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships.
