Makinde Captures Long Jump Title

BOSTON, Mass. -- Foluso Makinde won her second straight indoor title in the long jump, helping boost the Mavericks into sixth place after the first day of the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Cente Friday.
Makinde won with a mark of 19 feet, six inches, edging Emporia State's Shannon Butler by a half-inch.
Indianapolis leads the team competition with 16.33 points. UNO has 10 points and is the only North Central Conference school to score the first day.
In other first-day events, Laverne Monger was seventh in the 60-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash preliminaries; Molly Belling was eighth in the 60-meter dash and 12th in the 200-meter dash prelims, and Karin Clarkson was 12th in the 400-meter dash prelims.
Makinde, a senior from Ipetumodu, Nigeria, fell short of her personal best and UNO record of 20 feet, 1/2 inch in the long jump.
