Mavericks Finish 8th in National Meet

BOSTON, Mass. -- Laverne Monger finished third in the 200-meter dash and Molly Belling placed seventh in the 60-meter dash finals Saturday to lead the Mavericks to their second-straight top 10 finish at the NCAA II Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center. UNO finished 8th with 18 points behind champion Lincoln (Mo.) University.
Monger ran the 200-meters in 24.52 seconds, just .40 behind the champion, Davita Prendergast of Lincoln. Belling ran the 60 in 7.68 seconds, while Monger finished ninth in the same race in 7.72. April Brown of California State-Los Angeles won the event with a time of 7.43.
Karin Clarkson finished 12th in the 400-meter dash prelims and failed to qualify for the finals. She was clocked in 57.61 seconds. The Maverick 4x400 relay team was ninth in the final event of the meet. The team of Clarkson, Becky Hughes, Lisa Lane and Magda Orzylowski recorded a time of 3:47.99.
The Mavericks, who finished fifth last year in their best showing ever in the national indoor meet, went into Saturday's events with 10 points after Foluso Makinde won her second straight national long jump title with a leap of 19-feet, 6 inches.
