Mavericks Sweep Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. -- Bryan Frew and Evan Porter each drove in a pair of runs to a lead a 6-3 win in the first game and four unearned runs in the nightcap gave the Mavericks a sweep of Nebraska-Kearney with a 4-3 win Saturday at Memorial Field.
The Mavericks improved to 10-3, while the Lopers slipped to 9-3.
Porter doubled home a pair of runs and Frew singled in two more in a four-run second inning for the Mavericks in the opener. Mitch Mirtsching and Cole Archer singled in runs to cut the lead in half for UNK in the bottom of the inning. Archer's RBI single in the fourth pulled the Lopers within 4-3.
UNO got one run back in the fifth as Frew singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right by Lyle Lafountain. In the sixth, Porter singled, went to second on an error and scored on a single to center by Derrick Kendrick.
Josh Lundin (1-0) go the win, with help from lefthander Brian Hauck, who pitched two scoreless innings for his first save.
The Mavericks scored three times in the first inning of the nightcap with two outs, taking advantage of two UNK errors. Matt Meyer, who had three hits, singled in Chad Leon and then scored, along with Lafountain, on a throwing error.
UNO made it 4-0 in the third as Frew reached on an error, went to second on an error on a pickoff attempt and later scored on a single by Porter.
The Lopers answered with three runs in the bottom of the third on a hit, two walks, a hit batsman and a Maverick error. James Jensen's infield single drove in Adam Janky.
Shawn Smith and Blake Denoyer shut down the Lopers the final 3 2/3 innings with hitless relief. Smith earned the win to improve to 3-0 and Denoyer recorded his fourth save.
The Mavericks are back in action Monday when they host Southwest Minnesota State in a noon doubleheader at the Ball Park at Boys Town.
