Mavs Win Meet, Houtz 2nd in Playoff

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Mandy Houtz shot a second-round 78 Monday to lead the Mavericks to the team title in the USD Invitational at The Bluffs Golf Club. Houtz, who was in a four-way tie for first place, lost on the fifth playoff hole to Rachel Schmidt of Upper Iowa.
The Mavericks shot 346-330--676 to edge Winona State and South Dakota by two shots in the team race on the course that will be the site of the NCAA II North Regional tournament on May 1-2. Minnesota State, Mankato was fourth, five shots off the pace.
Houtz, a senior from Manhattan, Kan., finished off a first-round 82 Monday morning after darkness halted play late Sunday. She came back with her best round of the 2005-06 season on the 5,965-yard, par-72 course, tying with Schmidt, Carlie Roach of Augustana and Morgan Proshek of Winona State. Proshek and Roach bogeyed the second and third holes, respectively, to drop out, and Houtz bogeyed the fifth to Schmidt's par on the fifth hole, the par-5 18th.
The UNO team scores included Houtz 82-78--160; Lynn Mulligan 85-81--166; Lindsay Newton, 90-84--174; Kate O'Dea 89-87--176, and Sara Wolfe 90-90--180.
Two other Mavs competed as individuals. Amanda Stock followed a first-round 79 with an 86 for 165 and Carly Froehlich shot 89-86--175.
The Mavericks host the Ironwood Collegiate Classic at the Ironwood Country Club this Friday and Saturday in their next action.
