Mavs Win Regional, Advance to Final 8

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The Mavericks, led by senior Amanda Stock's fourth-place finish, captured their second straight NCAA Division II North Regional title Tuesday to advance to the national meet May 10-13 in Grand Valley, Mich. Minnesota State, Mankato edged North Dakota for second place to join UNO in the eight-team field at the national meet.
Stock shot a three-over 75 in the morning, but struggled to an 87 in the afternoon to finish at 235, five shots behind individual champion Carley Roach of Augustana, who fired a 230 with rounds of 76 and 80 Tuesday after an opening-round 74.
The Mavericks, with a morning 317 on the 6,048-yard, par-72 The Bluffs, held a 12-shot edge going into the final 18 holes. Senior Mandy Houtz shot a pair of 81s to finish in a tie for 10th at 242 for the tournament.
Minnesota State, trailing North Dakota by 15 shots entering the final round, shot a 324 in the afternoon to edge the Fighting Sioux by a single shot. Roach, along with Rachel Schmidt of Upper Iowa, who shots 234 to finish third, will also advance to the national meet as the top two individuals not on a qualifying team.
The tournament was delayed twice by thunderstorms and hampered by windy conditions.
