Services for Shelly Thompson Held Saturday

Funeral services for UNO volleyball player Shelly Thompson were held Saturday in Lincoln at 10:30 at the Southwood Lutheran Church. Thompson, an 18-year-old freshman, died May 31 from head injuries she suffered early May 30. "The entire athletic department mourns the loss of Shelly and shares the grief of her family and her teammates," UNO athletic director David Herbster said. "This is a terrible loss for everyone."
The Lincoln native appeared in five matches for the Mavericks last season and was expected to be a contender for a starting position as an outside hitter on this year's team, according to head coach Rose Shires.
Thompson suffered her injury early Tuesday near her parents' home southeast of Lincoln and was taken to a Lincoln hospital, where she was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
"She was an upbeat person who was always interested in others," Shires said. "We were fortunate to have known her and very unfortunate to lose her."
Thompson was a two-time Class B all-state volleyball player and a 2005 all-class, all-state selection in basketball at Norris High School, setting season and career scoring records. She also lettered in track and was a four-year member of the school's honor roll.
She is survived by her parents, Lyle and Donna Thompson.
