Mavs Headed for NCC Outdoor Championships

The Nebraska-Omaha women's track and field team will compete at the North Central Conference Outdoor Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D., this weekend. The meet begins Friday at noon and will conclude on Saturday afternoon. Results and schedules of the meet can be found at www.goaugie.com.
Last Year's NCC Finish: UNO finished in second place with 163 points behind the 2005 NCC outdoor champion South Dakota, which finished with 202 points. The Mavericks' Debbie Akerly was named the NCC's Most Outstanding Athlete after recording 44.5 points for UNO at the meet.
NCC Honors Belling: Molly Belling is this week's North Central Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week after capturing the 100 and 200-meter titles at the Howard Wood Relays last weekend.
Last Weekend: Freshman Molly Belling won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays, setting meet and stadium records in each event. She ran the 100-meters in 11.67 and the time now ranks fifth in NCAA Division II competition this season. She set the school record in the 200 with a time of 23.97, which ranks third on the national season-to-date list. In addition, Magda Orzylowski won the 400 meter hurdles and Laverne Monger finished second in the 100-meter dash behind Belling. Karin Clarkson finished fifth in the 400-meter dash and Kelly Hollmann was fifth in the triple jump. Jennifer Victor had a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run. The Mavs also had a second-place medal in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 46.73 seconds. Others to place included Lisa Lane, fourth in the 100-meter low hurdles; Ashley Yates, fourth in the long jump; Kelli Mertes, fifth in the 1,500-meter run, and Sarah Zeisler, fifth in the 3,000-meter run.
UNO Coaches: Tim Hendricks is in his 19th season as the UNO head cross country/track& field coach. Hendricks is a 1969 graduate of Peru State College where he was an NAIA cross country All-American and a member of its Hall of Fame. In 1976, he was second in the marathon at the U.S. Track and Field Championships. He has been named the North Central Conference Coach of the year four different times (2001, 2003 indoor and 1995, 1996 outdoor). In 2001, Hendricks earned the 2001 Distinguished Service Award by the NCAA II Coaches Association and was also named the NCC Indoor Coach of the Year. Steve Smith begins his first season as the assistant coach at UNO. Smith had been assistant track and field coach and physical education instructor at Barton County Community College in Kansas since 2002, after serving from 1993-2002 as an assistant at Nebraska.
