Shires Named UNO's SWA

Head volleyball coach Rose Shires has been named interim Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) for women's athletics, University of Nebraska at Omaha athletic director David Herbster announced today. Shires' new role includes oversight and direction of the women's athletic program.
As SWA, Shires will represent UNO at North Central Conference and NCAA meetings, oversee the athletic gender equity plan, and be a liaison to the Maverick Women's Executive Board. She will retain her head coaching duties, but not teach classes along with the new SWA responsibilities. Shires also will coordinate the UNO Diet Pepsi Women's Walk, the principal fundraiser for women's athletics.
Chancellor Nancy Belck cited Shires experience and tenure as key components for the SWA appointment: "Throughout her 19 years at UNO, Rose Shires has been a respected and winning coach, said Belck.' Her rapport with student athletes is remarkable, as she helps them attain their educational and athletic goals. And, she has been a strong ambassador for women's athletics on campus and in the community. Now as SWA, Rose will have the opportunity to represent UNO women's athletics to even larger audiences on local, regional and national levels. I'm confident she has the expertise and experience to take our program to even greater heights."
The Women's Walk, grossed over $350,000 last year, largely through the efforts of more than 1,200 walkers and corporate sponsors, and it has raised more than $2.8 million for scholarships, equipment and travel in its 21 years of existence.
"We are fortunate to have someone of Rose Shires' leadership ability and experience to serve as the senior women's administrator," Herbster said. "Throughout her career at UNO, Rose has been a winning coach, a strong advocate for women's athletics, and she has been a major ingredient to the tradition and success of the Walk.
The El Paso, Texas, native is a 1985 graduate of Texas-El Paso and came to UNO as an assistant volleyball coach in 1988-89 and was named the fifth head coach of the Maverick program in 1990. She has guided the Mavericks to three NCC titles and seven NCAA Division II tournaments, including the 1996 national championship. She was the American Volleyball Coaches Association national coach of the year in 1996. Rose also has been named the Sportswoman of the Year by the Omaha Sportscasters Association and the state college coach of the year by the Omaha World-Herald. The second-winningest coach in UNO history, she brings a 333-183 mark into the 2006 season.
"This is obviously a big responsibility, and I'm honored to take it on. It is an exciting opportunity, given the excellent women's program we have at UNO," Shires said.
The Mavericks have captured two consecutive women's all-sports titles in the North Central Conference, helping the school finish second and third, respectively, in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup Standings.
