Jul 21, 2006 | General
Marian Andersen, longtime community volunteer and sports enthusiast, has been named chairman of the 2007 University of Nebraska at Omaha's Diet Pepsi Women's Walk for Women's Athletics. UNO's premier athletic fundraising activity, last year's Walk raised about $350,000, largely through the efforts of more than 1,200 walkers and corporate sponsors.
Over its 21-year history, the event has brought in more than $2.8 million for female student-athlete scholarships.
Joining Andersen as part of the Walk Leadership team will be former Walk chairman Maggie Lehning, who served for five years; and recently named Senior Woman Administrator and head volleyball coach Rose Shires.
Lehning presided over the Walk from 2001-05 and raised $1.5 million during her tenure.
Andersen said her participation as walk chairman was a personal commitment to UNO. "At a time, when the UNO athletic program is under study and facing financial stress, it's important for our community to lend additional support. I'm proud of our female student athletes' accomplishments, both athletic and academic, and I want to do everything possible to ensure their continued success."
Lehning agreed. "Raising the necessary scholarship funding is our paramount goal. As a past Walk chairman, I've met many of the remarkable young women who benefit from the scholarships we provide. These talented athletes are an asset to our athletic program and to the campus, and I am excited about working with Marian and Rose on the 2007 Walk. "
Chancellor Nancy Belck also was enthusiastic about the new leadership team, saying "What a winning combination we have in Marian, Maggie, and Rose! Each brings a fresh perspective, new ideas and a wealth of experience to the Women's Walk. We're looking forward to another record-setting year, with these three dynamic women at the helm."
Shires, too, said she looked forward to her expanded involvement in the Walk. "Over the past 19 years, I've seen the Walk get bigger and better, with increased campus, community and corporate support. I'm confident that with Marian and Maggie we can take this event to the next level in 2007."
