Maverick Runners Open Season Saturday

The Mavericks open the 2006 season in the UNO/CU Invitational at Chalco Hills course in Omaha. UNO and co-host Creighton University will be joined by Nebraska in the 5,000-meter meet. The race will begin at 10:30 a.m.
About the Mavericks:
UNO returns three runners from last year's team that finished third in the North Central Conference meet. Junior Tahnee Tuenge was seventh in the conference meet last year, sophomore Kelli Mertes was 14th as a freshman and junior Kaylen Harris was 27th.
The Mavericks went on to post a seventh-place finish in the NCAA II regional meet. The squad also includes freshmen Mary Margaret Nelson, Garretson, S.D., Rachel Truckenbrod, Omaha, and Lindsay Roland, Omaha. All except Roland will compete on Saturday.
The Coach:
Steve Smith took over as the interim head coach for the cross country and track program at UNO Aug. 28 after 19-year coach Tim Hendricks retired. Smith is a 1981 graduate of Pittsburg State and began his coaching career at that school. He has also served as a collegiate assistant at Wichita State and Nebraska. He joined the UNO program as an assistant under Hendricks in January, 2006.
Next Week:
The Mavericks will run in the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Pioneers Park in Lincoln. The meet will begin at 10 a.m.
