Runners to Compete in Lincoln Saturday

The Mavericks will end a two-week layoff and compete in the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Wesleyan University Invitational Saturday, Sept. 16. The 6,000-meter race will begin at 10 a.m. at Lincoln's Pioneer Park.
About the Mavericks:
Junior Kaylen Harris led UNO with a third-place finish in the season's first meet on Sept. 6. The Mavericks finished second behind Nebraska in the three-team event. UNO returns three runners from last year's team that finished third in the North Central Conference meet. Junior Tahnee Tuenge was seventh in the conference meet last year, sophomore Kelli Mertes was 14th as a freshman and junior Kaylen Harris was 27th. The Mavericks went on to post a seventh-place finish in the NCAA II regional meet. The squad also includes freshmen Mary Margaret Nelson, Garretson, S.D., Rachel Truckenbrod, Omaha, and Lindsay Roland, Omaha. All except Roland will compete on Saturday.
The Coach:
Steve Smith took over as the interim head coach for the cross country and track program at UNO Aug. 28 after 19-year coach Tim Hendricks retired. Smith is a 1981 graduate of Pittsburg State and began his coaching career at that school. He has also served as a collegiate assistant at Wichita State and Nebraska. He joined the UNO program as an assistant under Hendricks in January, 2006.
Next Week:
The Mavericks will be off until competing Sept. 30 in the NCAA Division II Pre-Regional meet in Wayne, Neb. The 10 a.m. meet will be run over the same course where the regional competition will be held on Nov. 4.
