Cross Country Team Heads to Pre-Regional Meet

The Mavericks resume competition this week when they travel to Wayne, Neb. for the NCAA Pre-Regional meet. The event will begin at 10 a.m. The meet will serve as a preview of the course that will be the site of the Nov. 4 NCAA Division II regional meet. All six runners will compete in the 6,000-meter race at the Wayne State College Recreation Center.
About the Mavericks:
Kelli Mertes, a sophomore from Brownville, Neb., won her first collegiate meet when she won the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at Pioneers Park in Lincoln. Mertes ran the 6,000-meter course in 23:20.65, leading UNO to a third-place finish in the 22-team College Division of the meet. The Mavericks finished 7th overall, including the five University Division teams competing. Mertes was named the North Central Conference's woman athlete of the week for her performance. Kaylen Harris was seventh in the event. The first week, Harris led UNO with a third-place finish in the UNO/CU Invitational Sept. 6.
The Coach:
Steve Smith took over as the interim head coach for the cross country and track program at UNO Aug. 28 after 19-year coach Tim Hendricks retired. Smith is a 1981 graduate of Pittsburg State and began his coaching career at that school. He has also served as a collegiate assistant at Wichita State and Nebraska. He joined the UNO program as an assistant under Hendricks in January, 2006.
Next Week:
The Mavericks will return to action on Oct. 6, running in the Coyote Invitational in Vermillion, S.D., hosted by the University of South Dakota. The meet will begin at 4 p.m. and will be the final tuneup before the North Central Conference championships, which will also be held in Vermillion.
