
Lincoln Tournament Next for Mavericks

The Mavericks continue their fall schedule with the 36-hole Nebraska Wesleyan Invitational Tournament Sunday and Monday, Oct. 1-2, in Lincoln. The field will play the first round at Highlands Golf Course and the second round at Pioneers Golf Course.
The Lineup
All seven players on the Maverick roster, three freshmen and four juniors, will compete in this week's tournament. The veteran players returning include Lynn Mulligan, Lindsay Newton, Kate O'Dea and Sara Wolfe. Mulligan leads the team with a fall scoring average of 79.8 and Newton is next with an 80.7 average, followed by Sara Wolfe, 82.8.
Last Week
UNO was fourth in the 13-team Mustang Invitational in Marshall, Minn. Lynn Mulligan led the squad with a tie for 11th at 164. Sara Wolfe was tied for 13th and Lindsay Newton tied for 16th. UNO shot 339-322--661 in the meet, which was won by North Dakota.
The 2005-06 Maverick Season
UNO won five tournaments and a dual meet, finished second and third twice and fourth and fifth once each during the season. The Mavericks won the North Central regional title, earning a trip to the national final eight. Lindsay Newton shot a final round 77 to tie for 14th at 238 to lead the Mavericks in the 54-hole event that was shortened by one round because of weather. Teammate Lynn Mulligan was tied for 32nd with a 247 total after a final-round 79.
The Coach
Tim Nelson is in his fourth season as the Mavericks' head coach. Nelson took over the program in June, 2003, after serving one season as the head coach at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. A UNO graduate, he guided the Mavericks to the 2003 North Central Conference title and was named the NCC Coach of the Year. The Mavericks have advanced to the national finals in 2005 and 2006.
On Deck
The Mavericks will close the fall season Oct. 7-9 when they compete in the North Central Conference tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D. The 54-hole event will be conducted on three different courses. UNO finished third in last year's meet.
