Friday Meet in Lincoln Next for Mavs

The Maverick track team will compete in the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolf Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Friday, Feb. 16. Running events will get underway at 1 p.m. and the field events at 2 p.m. UNO will have 22 athletes competing in the meet.
Last Week
Senior LaCheryl Prince won the long jump and the triple jump at the Wayne State Wildcat Open last Saturday. Prince's triple jump of 38-8 1/4 is an NCAA II provisional qualifying mark. She recorded a 17-11 in the long jump. Her performance earned her North Central Conference field athlete of the week honors. The Mavericks also set a school record in the distance medley relay at the Iowa State Classic last Friday with a time of 11:54.11. Also at Wayne State, Jessica Purdy captured the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.65 seconds. Purdy was also third in the 200-meter dash. Other highlight performances included a second by Ashley Freeman in the high jump and a pair of fourth-place finishes by Libby DiBiase in the 55-meter dash and the 200. Kaeli Bixler was second in the shot put. At the Iowa State Classic, Angela Kampschnieder ran the 600-yard dash in a time of 1:24.59.
The Coach
Steve Smith took over as the interim head coach for the cross country and track program at UNO Aug. 28 after 19-year coach Tim Hendricks retired. Smith is a 1981 graduate of Pittsburg State and began his coaching career at that school. He has also served as a collegiate assistant at Wichita State and Nebraska. He joined the UNO program as an assistant under Hendricks in January, 2006.
On Deck
The Mavericks will compete in the North Central Conference championships in Vermillion, S.D., on Feb. 23-24. It will be the final regular season competition before the NCAA Division II Indoor Nationals in Boston March 9-10.
