Mavs Aim for NCC Track Title
Feb 23, 2007 | Track & Field
The Maverick track and field team, second in four of the past six league meets, will try to take the next step when it competes in the North Central Conference meet Friday and Saturday in the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
The meet b egins at 10 a.m. Friday with pentathlon events. Field events start at 1:30 p.m. and running events at 5 p.m. Saturday's schedule calls for a 10 a.m. field event start and a 12:30 p.m. start for women's running events.
UNO last won the indoor track title in 1981, but has been a contender most times. Last year, LaVerne Monger won the 60-meter dash and the 200 and Tahnee Tuenge the 1,000 to spark a second-place finish. In addition, Faluso Makinde won her second straight long jump title.
Monger and Tuengee return this year for the Mavericks, who have posted some impressive numbers thus far under coach Steve Smith, who took over the program after 20-year coach Tim Hendricks retired in September.
Last week, Monger won both the 60 and the 200 with provisional qualifying marks in the Prairie Wolf Invitational and senior Angela Kampschnieder broke a 14-year-old school mark in the 600 with a mark of 1:35.47.
