Mavericks 3rd After 1st Day at NCC Meet

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The distance medley relay team finished first Friday to lead the Mavericks into third place after the first day in the North Central Conference track and field meet at the DakotaDome. Minnesota State, Mankato and South Dakota are ahead of UNO.
The meet concludes Saturday, with field events getting underway at 10 a.m. and running events at 12:30 p.m.
Minnesota State has 45 points and USD 39.5 to UNO's 34.5 after six events.
The relay team of Kellie Mertes, Angela Kampschnieder, Mary Margaret Nelson and Tahnee Tuenge ran the event in 12:35.51.
In other finals Friday, Julie Gass was fourth in the pentathlon; Ashley Yates sixth in the long jump; Kelly Hollman second and Ashley Freeman fifth in the high jump, and Kaylen Harris was fourth in the 5000-meter run.
