Iowa State, Wayne State Meets on Tap for UNO

The Mavericks will compete in two meets again this week, sending athletes to the Iowa State Classic on Friday and Saturday and to the Wayne State Open on Saturday. The Iowa State Classic features some of the top teams in Division I and II in the Midwest. Friday competition starts at 2 p.m. and Saturday's at 9:25 a.m. Wayne State events begin at 11 a.m. with field events and 1:30 p.m. for running events.
Last Meet
Senior sprinter LaVerne Monger was named the North Central Conference's track athlete of the week for her performance in the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational last weekend. Monger broke the UNO record in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 24.41 seconds in the prelims just minutes after sophomore Molly Belling had set the record at 24.45 seconds. She went on to finish fifth in the finals and also was fourth in the 60-meter dash. Belling finished sixth in the 200 and third in the 60.
The Coach
Steve Smith took over as the interim head coach for the cross country and track program at UNO Aug. 28 after 19-year coach Tim Hendricks retired. Smith is a 1981 graduate of Pittsburg State and began his coaching career at that school. He has also served as a collegiate assistant at Wichita State and Nebraska. He joined the UNO program as an assistant under Hendricks in January, 2006.
On Deck
UNO will run in its final indoor meet prior to the NCC championships when the team competes in the Prairie Wolf Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., on Friday, Feb. 16. The NCC meet will be Feb. 23-24 in Vermillion, S.D.
