Hessel, Wemhoff Lead Mavs 1st Day at Nationals

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Jessica Hessel and Lisa Wemhoff each placed in the 50-yard freestyle finals Wednesday, leading the Mavericks into 19th place after the first day of competition in the NCAA II Swimming & Diving championships.
Hessel, a junior from Wichita, Kan., was 14th with a time of 24.26 and Wemhoff, a senior from Norfolk, Neb., was 16th with a mark of 24.70.
Omaha sophomore Lindsey Kline fell just short of placing in the 1000-yard freestyle final, finishing 18th with a time of 10:33.59.
Competition continues Thursday in the four-day event, with prelims slated for a 9:30 a.m. CDT start. Finals will begin at 5 p.m.
