Golfers Open Spring Season in Florida Monday

The Mavericks kick off the spring portion of their season with the 54-hole Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational March 12-13 in Winter Spring, Fla. UNO will send six golfers to the tournament, which calls for 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday at the Tescawilla Country Club. The 13-team field includes defending national champion and host Rollins College and Lynn University, which was third in last year's nationals.
The Lineup
The Mavericks' five-player lineup will include juniors Lindsay Newton, Lynn Mulligan, Kate O'Dea, Sara Wolfe and freshman Amy Powell. Freshman Rachel Mooberry will compete as an individual.
Last Fall
UNO won its third North Central Conference title to wrap up the fall competition. Lindsay Newton tied for first and lost a playoff, while Lynn Mulligan finished third in the tournament. Both were named to the All-NCC first team, while Erin Ommen, who finished in a tie for seventh, was named to the second-team.
The 2006 Maverick Season
UNO recorded two tournament wins and also finished 3rd, 4th and 7th in fall tournaments.
The Coach
Tim Nelson is in his fourth season as the Mavericks' head coach. Nelson took over the program in June, 2003, after serving one season as the head coach at the College of St. Mary in Omaha. A UNO graduate, he has guided the Mavericks to the 2003 and 2006 North Central Conference titles and was named the NCC Coach of the Year both years. The Mavericks have advanced to the national finals in 2005 and 2006 under Nelson.

UNO will play in five spring tournaments before the April 30-May 2 NCAA II regionals. Next up for the Mavericks will be the March 25-26 Missouri Western State Invitational in St. Joseph, Mo.
