
Mavs Rally to Tie for 2nd, But Fall in Playoff

WATERLOO, Iowa -- Truman State edged the Mavericks by a shot on the first hole of a sudden death playoff for second place in the NCAA II North Regional Wednesday to earn a spot in next week's NCAA Division II tournament, spoiling UNO's final-round comeback from a 21-shot deficit.
The Bulldogs posted a team total 20 to UNO's 21 on the par-five 15th hole, the first hole of the playoff.
North Dakota cruised to the team title by a 21-shot margin over UNO and Truman State. The Fighting Sioux had a closing 324 for a 971 total over the 5,946-yard, par-72 Sunnyside Country Club. The Mavericks and Truman State each finished the 54-hole event at 992.
The Mavericks made up ground with all five players posting solid rounds, led by Mulligan who birdied the 18th hole for a career-best 73. Lindsay Newton, with a two-over 38 on the back nine, carded an 80, Sara Wolfe and Kate O'Dea each added an 83 for UNO's 318 total, the second-best team round of the event. Errin Ommen carded a final-round 84. Only North Dakota's opening round of 317 was better than UNO's final round.
Meanwhile, Truman State shot its worst round of the tournament with a 339, topped by Julie Williams' 80. The Bulldogs began the day six shots out of the lead and nine shots ahead of third-place Augustana.
Upper Iowa's Rachael Schmidt shot a 78 to finish at 226 for the individual title, five shots ahead of Williams. Mulligan and Wolfe finished tied for 11th place in the individual standings. Mulligan's 73 matched Schmidt's opening round as the best one-round scores in the tournament.
Mulligan had three birdies and 11 pars and had an eight-hole stretch where she played one-under golf.
