Frette, Shires Named Associate ADs

University of Nebraska at Omaha athletic director David Miller has announced the restructuring of the program staff, including the addition of two longtime staff members, Tom Frette and Rose Shires as associate athletic directors.
"We have made some moves and changes that will allow us to better function as a department," Miller said. "I believe that not only are we taking full advantage of the talents and abilities that we have on this staff, we are providing ourselves an opportunity to succeed both in the department and also within the community."
Frette, who served as the interim athletic director from November until May, will become the senior associate athletic director. Frette joined the UNO staff as the associate athletic trainer in 1987 and became the head trainer in 1997. The Story City, Iowa, native is a 1986 graduate of Northern Iowa. He earned his master's degree from UNO in 1989.
Frette will have mostly internal responsibilities, overseeing five of the school's 15 sports in addition to most support staff, including the ticket office, training, strength and conditioning, sports information, equipment room and facilities. Frette will oversee soccer, wrestling, swimming and diving, baseball and tennis.
Rusty McKune, who has served as the acting head trainer for athletics since November, will become the new head athletic trainer.
In addition, 18-year head volleyball coach Rose Shires will become the associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. She will retain her volleyball duties as well. Shires will oversee seven sports and some of the support staff, including compliance.
Shires served as the school's SWA last year, directing the UNO Diet Pepsi Women's Walk in addition to other responsibilities. Meanwhile, she guided the Mavericks into the NCAA II regional tournament for a third straight season and eighth overall. She will oversee men's and women's basketball, softball, golf, cross country and the indoor and outdoor track and field programs.
Also, Renae Church has been elevated to the position of assistant athletic director for business. Church joined the department last fall as the director of the athletic business office.
UNO has two other assistant athletic directors, Bob Flannery, who directs the marketing department, and Connie Claussen, who is in charge of special projects.
