Puc Captures 400 Title

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Freshman sprinter Anja Puc led the way for the Mavericks Friday in the Prairie Wolf Invitational when she won the 400-meter title at the Bob Devaney Indoor Track.
Puc (name is pronounced 'Ahn-ya Puts'), who already has recorded an automatic qualifying time in the 400, won with a time of 55.77. Teammate Kayla Koepke, a freshman from Hadar, Neb., was sixth.
Jolene Smith, a freshman from Howard Lake, Minn., ran the 600-meter event in 1:42.10 to finish sixth.
Puc, from Medvode, Slovenia, also finished sixth in the 200-meter event with a time of 25.28, just short of a provisional qualifying time.
Other top performances Friday by the Mavericks included a fourth-place finish by Omaha sophomore Ashley Yates in the triple jump with a personal-best of 37-4 1/2. Yates was also seventh in the long jump. Rasheema Pitt was sixth in the triple jump and 11th in the triple and Julia Warneke was 13th in both events.
Freshman Shana Brown, from Carson, Calif., was fifth in the long jump with a mark of 17-7 1/2; Molly Belling, a junior from Omaha, was sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.82 seconds and Madison Haugland, a freshman from Papillion, was sixth in the shot put with a mark of 41-4 1/4.
The Mavericks' next test will be to try to defend their title in the North Central Conference indoor meet next weekend in Mankato, Minn.
