
3 Top 10 Finishes Put Mavericks in 5th

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Maverick 200-yard freestyle relay team swam to a sixth-place finish, leading a group of solid performances Thursday that sent the University of Nebraska at Omaha into fifth place after the second day of competition in the NCAA Division II swimming and diving meet.
UNO has 111 points at the halfway point of the four-day meet at the University of Missouri. Truman State leads for the second straight day with 226 points, with Drury just one back at 225, followed by North Dakota at 165 and UC-San Diego at 151.
Jessica Hessel finished eighth in the 100-yard butterfly and Megan Guthmiller was ninth in the 200-yard freestyle for the Mavericks, giving them three top 10 finishes.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lucy Zamecnik, Cait Hopkins, Kristy Gmeiner and Hessel swam the event in 1:35.80, less than a second off the school record of 1:35.24.
In the 400-yard individual medley, Laura Kemp was 11th and Ashley Barna 16th to earn points.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Hessel recorded a time of 56.52, just 15-hundredths off the school record. Jessica LaFave was 15th.
Besides Guthmiller in the 200-yard freestyle, Lindsey Kline swam to a 13th-place finish.
In the final event Thursday, the 400-yard medley relay squad of LaFave, Kemp, Hessel and Guthmiller was 11th.
Competition continues Friday with prelims at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The meet will conclude Saturday night.
