Mavericks Finish Third In Season Opener

The Maverick cross country team began their season with a third-place finish in the UNO/Creighton Classic. UNO earned 90 points, trailing Augustana and Nebraska over the 4,000-meter course at Chili Greens in Omaha on Saturday morning. Creighton finished fourth and Iowa Western Community College was fifth.
Nebraska's Jen Webers outkicked Alyssa Anderson of Augustana to win the meet in a time of 14:37. Anderson was second in 14:43. Augustana finished with 25 points, five ahead of Nebraska. Jenny Rogers of Augustana was third as the Vikings placed five runners in the top nine spots.
The Mavericks' top five runners finished in places 16 – 20. Sophomore Lisa Tesarek of Omaha paced the Mavs with a time of 16:21, just edging out freshman Amanda Stauffer of Milford, Nebraska. Freshman Carolina Kunnemann of Imperial, Nebraska ran 16:28 to place third for the UNO. Janna Brons and Mary Margaret Nelson were the fourth and fifth finishers as the Mavericks' top five runners crossed the line within 25 seconds of one another.
The Mavericks' next meet will be Friday September 12 when they travel to Warrensburg, Mo., for the Central Missouri Open.
