This Week
The top-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team will return to action this week to host former North Central Conference foe No. 11 St. Cloud State on Thursday, Jan. 22 and the No. 1-ranked wrestling program in NCAA Division III, Augsburg on Friday, Jan. 23. Both duals will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Sapp Fieldhouse and will feature a free live webcast. Thursday's dual with SCSU will also be shown live on NET2.
Records & Rankings
The Mavericks enter this week with an overall record of 4-0 and ranked No. 1 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll released on Jan. 21. The Mavericks have nine individuals ranked in their respective weight classes. Todd Meneely (157), Aaron Denson (165), Ross Taplin (174) and Austin Boehm (184) are each the top-ranked wrestlers in their weight classes, while Cody Garcia is ranked second at 133 pounds. Other ranked Mavericks include fourth-ranked wrestlers Mario Morgan (141), Esai Dominguez (149), Jacob Marrs (197) and Tony Lewis (285).
No. 11 St. Cloud State is 2-2 on the year with wins over Findlay and St. John's. The Huskies have four wrestlers ranked, No. 3 Brad Padgett (184) and eighth ranked wrestlers Josh Williams (133), John Sundgren (157) and Tad Merritt (165). Augsburg is 7-1 this season. The Auggies are led by top-ranked wrestlers Travis Lang (133), Willy Holst (149) and second-ranked Jared Massey (197).
The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 30th season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 280-109-5 career mark. He has twice been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Mavericks to NCAA II national championships.
Last Week
UNO hosted the Brand Open last week at the Sapp Fieldhouse with more than 130 wrestlers from 17 different schools competing. UNO claimed the championship at 157 as well as the co-title at 165. UNO also finished the day with runner-up finishes at 149, 197 and 285. Todd Meneely finished the day with a 4-0 record, claiming the title at 157, while Aaron Denson and Ryan Pankoke were co-champions at 165. Esai Dominguez (149), Jacob Marrs (197) and Tony Lewis each claimed second-place finishes.
On Deck
The UNO wrestling team will host No. 5 Central Oklahoma on Friday, Jan. 30 and interstate rival No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, Jan. 31. Both duals will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Sapp Fieldhouse.
