The University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team returns to action this weekend with duals scheduled against a pair of top-five opponents. UNO hosts No. 5 Central Oklahoma on Friday, Jan. 30 and the defending NCAA II national champions and interstate rival No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, Jan. 31. Records & Rankings
The Mavericks enter this week with an overall record of 6-0 and ranked No. 1 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll released on Jan. 21. The Mavericks have nine ranked individuals in their respective weight classes. Todd Meneely (157), Aaron Denson (165), Ross Taplin (174) and Austin Boehm (184) are all the top-ranked wrestlers in their weight classes, while Cody Garcia is ranked second at 133 pounds. Other ranked Mavericks include fourth-ranked wrestlers Mario Morgan (141), Esai Dominguez (149), Jacob Marrs (197) and Tony Lewis (285).
UCO is currently 9-4-1 this season and ranked No. 5. The Bronchos have six ranked individual wrestlers and are led by No. 1 Dustin Finn, the top-ranked wrestler at 285 pounds. Other wrestlers ranked in their respective weight classes include third-ranked wrestlers Colby Robinson (141) and Mikey Morgan (165), No. 4 Tim Elliott (125), No. 5 Tommy McCarty and sixth-ranked Luke Elmore (149).
The Lopers enter this week with an overall record of 10-3 and 1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. UNK is ranked fourth in the lastest NWCA poll and have five ranked wrestlers. The Lopers are paced by No. 2 Marty Usman (174) and third-ranked Ryan Etherton (149). Other ranked Lopers are No. 6 Taylor May (165) and eighth-ranked wrestlers Paul Sutton (184) and Matt Farrell (197).
The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 30th season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 282-109-5 career mark. He has twice been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Mavericks to NCAA II national championships.
Last Week
UNO improved to 6-0 this season with a pair of impressive wins at the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks defeated former North Central Conference foe, No. 11 St. Cloud State, 37-6 on Thursday and came back the next night to easily defeat the top-ranked wrestling program in NCAA Division III, Augsburg, 28-9.
On Deck
The UNO wrestling team will be back in action next weekend with a pair of road duals scheduled for Feb. 5-6. The Mavericks will head to Sioux Falls, S.D. to battle No. 14 Augustana before traveling to Mankato, Minn., the following day, to take on third-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato. Both duals will begin at 7 p.m. and will have a free live webcast.
