OMAHA, Neb. – After dropping the first contest of the dual, the University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team won the final nine contests, including five pins, as the Mavericks cruised to a 43-3 win over the University of Central Oklahoma. Cody Garcia, Todd Meneely, Brent Pankoke, Jacob Marrs and Tony Lewis each recorded a pin as the top-ranked Mavericks improve to 7-0 in duals this season, while UCO drops their third consecutive dual, and falls to 9-6-1.
This is just the second time UNO has topped the 40-point mark in duals this year and the 43 points are the most they have ever scored against the Bronchos. The previous high was 31 in the 2004-05 season when Mavericks posted a 31-5 victory. UNO also beat Limestone College 42-9 in the first round of the NWCA National Duals for their only other 40-point dual.
The lone highlight for UCO came in the first match at 125 where No. 4 ranked Tim Elliott improved to 30-10 this year as he scored a 10-4 decision over the Mavericks Matt Rein.
At 133 pounds, Garcia pinned UCO's Scott Berens in just 2:21 to give UNO the lead for good. Fourth-ranked Mario Morgan followed that up with a 6-3 decision against No. 3 Colby Robinson.
The match at 149 pitted No. 4 Esai Dominguez with No. 6-ranked Luke Elmore. The redshirt freshman from Creighton Prep tallied seven takedowns as he won by major decision, 16-7.
Meneely gave UNO its second pin of the dual at 157 pounds. The senior made quick work of UCO's Ed Jackson as he scored a takedown in just 11 seconds before pinning him in 2:11. Meneely's record remains unblemished as he improves to 16-0.
At 165 pounds, Ryan Pankoke squared off with UCO's Kelly Henderson. After wrestling to a scoreless first period, Pankoke scored an escape in the second period and a takedown in the third to come away with a 3-1 decision.
Ross Taplin continued the Maverick rout at 175 pounds. The senior recorded a takedown in just six seconds and an escape in the third period to win a 4-2 decision over No. 5 Tommy McCarty. Taplin improves to 30-6, the highest win total of any Maverick wrestler.
UNO won the final three bouts by pins. At 184 pounds, Pankoke pinned Daniel Morrison just before the second period ended at 4:59, while Marrs picked up his 20th win of the year with a pin at 4:00 over Zach James. At heavyweight, Lewis had the quickest Maverick pin as he needed just 1:30 to pin the top-ranked wrestler at 285 pounds, Dustin Finn.
Another top-five opponent will be waiting for UNO when it returns to action, tomorrow night as No. 4-ranked Nebraska-Kearney visits the Sapp Fieldhouse for a 7 p.m. dual. The Lopers are currently 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. UNK also owns a victory over UCO, as they defeated the Bronchos last night by the score of 24-17.
