OMAHA, Neb. – Before a standing-room only crowd Saturday night at the Sapp Fieldhouse, No. 1 Nebraska-Omaha defeated interstate rival, No. 4 Nebraska-Kearney, 26-9, in the Mavericks' final home dual of the 2008-09 season.
UNO won seven of the 10 bouts including a pin from Cody Garcia, a major decision from Mario Morgan and a technical fall from Todd Meneely.
The Mavericks, who have won six of the last seven meetings with UNK, improve to 8-0, while the defending NCAA II national champion Lopers fall to 12-4 in dual meets.
For the second straight night, UNO found itself in an early deficit after UNK's Michael Abril scored a 10-4 decision over Matt Rein, 10-3.
Garcia was able to give the Mavericks their first points of the night with a pin of Joey Morrison at 133 pounds. Garcia scored a takedown in 1:13 before pinning the junior from Lincoln in 1:19. The two-time National Champion has now won his last four matches by pin.
Morgan followed Garcia's victory with an impressive 18-6 major decision over Tyler Baker at 141 pounds. The Chiacgo, Ill. native dominated the third period, scoring four takedowns to claim the major decision.
No. 4 Esai Dominguez gave UNO a 13-3 lead with a 7-2 decision against third-ranked Ryan Etherton. The redshirt freshman tallied a takedown and an escape in the third period to secure the win.
At pounds 157 pounds, Meneely dominated the Lopers' Keenan McCurdy, recording a takedown in just 12 seconds en route to a 23-6 technical fall. The senior used eight takedowns and two nearfalls to improve to 17-0.
Trailing 18-3, the Lopers won the next two matches at 165 and 174 pounds to trim the Maverick lead down to 18-9. UNK's No. 6 Taylor May upset Aaron Denson, the top-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds, scoring a 3-2 decision. May recorded a takedown at 6:34 in the third period to come away with the win.
The match at 174 pounds pitted the top two wrestlers, No. 1 Ross Taplin and No. 2 Marty Usman. Usman scored two takedowns and an escape to defeat Taplin, 6-1.
The Mavericks ended UNK's bid for a comeback, winning the final three matches. Brent Pankoke topped No. 8 Paul Sutton 11-5, at 184 pounds, while Jacob Marrs, the fourth-ranked wrestler at 197, scored a reversal and a nearfall in the third period for a come-from-behind 10-6 decision.
Tony Lewis, who pinned the top-ranked wrestler at 285 last night, finished the Lopers off with a 4-2 decision. The senior scored a takedown in the second period and an escape in the third for the win.
The Mavericks return to action next week with road duals scheduled against two former North Central Conference foes, Feb. 5-6. UNO will battle No. 14 Augustana (6-4) on Thursday, Feb. 5, before taking on No. 3 Minnesota State, Mankato (9-3).
