ABILENE, Texas - The UNO cross country team concluded the 2009 season with a promise of future success after a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional meet. UNO was one of eight teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association to finish in the top ten of the 22-team meet held at Nelson Park in Abilene, Texas.
The Mavericks showed steady improvement throughout the season, led by a core of underclassmen runners. For the fourth time this season, freshman and Omaha native #Megan Oddo# led the Mavs, finishing 32nd overall in a time of 23:12, just one second off her personal best time over six kilometers. Junior college transfer #Dina Luka# was second for UNO and 39th overall in a time of 23:24. Sophomore #Kelly Esch# arrived later than the rest of the team because of an exam but still came in third for the Mavs at 23:31, a season-best time. She was 46th overall.
Freshman #Brittany Phillips# ran fourth for UNO, finishing in 60th place in a time of 23:57 while #Nicole Behm# was fifth for the Mavs and 81st overall at 24:36. #Lisa Tesarek# was sixth in a time of 26:00.
Four of UNO's six runners - Oddo, Esch, Phillips and Tesarek - are Omaha natives while Behm hails from North Platte.
The top three teams from the regional will compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship at the University of Southern Indiana on Nov. 21. MIAA champion Missouri Southern won the meet with Dallas Baptist of the Lone Star Conference finishing second and Truman State, another MIAA team, finishing third. A total of 143 runners competed in the women's race.
