Mavs Close Out 2009 Portion Of Schedule At Loper O

The No. 1 ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team will see its last action of the 2009 portion of this season's schedule when it heads to Kearney, Neb., for the 2009 Loper Open. The tournament is expected to draw more than 300 wrestlers from schools around the Midwest. Wrestling begins at 9 a.m. in the Health & Sports Center on the UNK campus.
Eight Mavs Place At Fort Hays Open
Senior 133-pounder Cody Garcia was back in dominating form Saturday at the Fort Hays Open after sitting out the Kaufman-Brand Open due to injury two weeks ago. The three-time All-American collected four more pins to take over as UNO's all-time falls leader with 64, passing Pat Kelley III (62). Garcia went 5-0 on the day and captured his third first-place finish of the season.
Garcia, the No. 2 ranked 133-pound wrestler in DII, was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler. He is now 14-0 on the year with 11 wins coming by fall.
Eight Mavericks placed on the day in the 353-man wrestling tournament which was held at Gross Memorial Coliseum on Dec. 5.
Redshirt freshman Mitch Brown placed second and top-ranked junior Aaron Denson took third at 184 pounds. Brown went 4-1 and Denson finished with a 5-1 mark on the day.
Senior Jacob Marrs finished third at 197 pounds. He collected six wins on the day and lost just one match. Marrs is now 13-4 on the year. Terrell McKinney (125 pounds), George Ivanov (157 pounds), Ryan Pankoke (165 pounds) and Taylor Escamilla (heavy weight) all collected fourth-place finishes.

The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 31st season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 289-109-5 (.723) career mark. He has been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year three times and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2009 Mavericks to NCAA Division II national championships.
UNO Is Unanimous No. 1 In Latest NWCA Poll
The University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team remains the unanimous No. 1 pick, according to the first official regular season poll released on Dec. 2 by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.
UNO, which went undefeated in duals at 13-0, won its sixth national title last year and the fourth in the last six years, garnered all eight first-place votes in balloting of coaches from around the country to finish with 160 points.
UNO sat atop the poll in all seven rankings last season. Newberry moved up one spot to No. 2 with 152 points, while Adams State and Central Oklahoma both climbed up two spots, coming in third and fourth. Pittsburgh-Johnstown jumped from 10th to fifth to round out the top five.

Maverick grapplers will return from holiday break and get back on the mat Saturday, Jan. 2 when they travel to Blair, Neb., for the Ron Beaman Open. Wrestling is slated for a 9 a.m. start from the Gardner-Hawks Center.
