KEARNEY, Neb. - Senior Cody Garcia (133 pounds) and Junior Ryan Pankoke (165 pounds) each took home titles from the UNK Loper Open in Kearney Saturday. Ten University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestlers finished sixth or higher in the Mavericks' final tournament of the 2009 portion of their schedule.
Pankoke went 4-0 on the day and turned in his best finish of the season. The Beaver Crossing, Neb., native knocked off two-time All-American and No. 4 ranked Taylor May of Nebraska-Kearney in the championship match with a 5-2 decision.
Garcia continued his phenomenal 2009-10 season with a 5-0 mark on the day and had four more wins by fall. The no. 2 ranked wrestler at 133 in DII is off to the best start of his career with a 19-0 record on the year and has garnered 15 of those wins by fall. Garcia has three or more pins in all four tournaments that he has competed in this season (Daktronics Open (3), Harold Nichols Open (4), Fort Hays Open (4) and Loper Open (4)).
He pinned Jake Eitzen 1:22 into the championship match to claim the 133-pound title. The Hutchinson, Kan., native was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler and received the award for Most Falls (four in 5:54, fastest was in 1:04).
Senior and No. 2 ranked Jacob Marrs collected a second-place finish at 197. He went 3-1 on the day and fell to Donovan McMahill by a 6-4 decision in the championship match.
Redshirt freshman George Ivanov also picked up a second-place finish. Ivanov compiled a 4-1 record on the day at 157 for his best finish of the season. The Council Bluffs, Iowa native fell in a close championship match, 3-2, to Chase Nelson.
Redshirt freshman Tim Chavez collected a third-place finish at 141. He went 4-1 on the day and pinned Hollan Gravely at 4:27 in the third-place match.
Heavyweight and No. 2 ranked Elijah Madison picked up five wins on the day en route to a third-place finish. His only loss came in the semifinal match to Josh Majerus, 7-5. The Kansas City native beat Sam Udell by a 3-2 decision in the third-place match.
Junior Mario Morgan, wrestling unattached, won the 141-pound title going 5-0 on the day.

Maverick grapplers will return from holiday break and get back on the mat Saturday, Jan. 2 when they travel to Blair, Neb., for the Ron Beaman Open. Wrestling is slated for a 9 a.m. start from the Gardner-Hawks Center.
