Feb 15, 2009 | General
WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The UNO wrestling team recorded six pins en route to a 48-6 dual victory against Truman State University in its second match at the MIAA duals Sunday afternoon.
The six pins are the most UNO has tallied in a dual this year since finishing with five pins in a 43-3 victory against the University of Central Oklahoma earlier this year. The 48 dual points are also the most they have scored since defeating St. Cloud State University 53-0 in the 2005-06 season.
Matt Rein, Esai Dominguez, Nathan Sigman, Aaron Denson, Ross Taplin and Brent Pankoke each notched the Mavericks' pins.
Rein recorded UNO's pin in the least amount of time in the duals' first match at 125 pounds. The sophomore from Abilene, Kan. needed only 31 seconds to pin Bulldogs' James Crone. After TSU forfeited its match at 133 pounds, Mario Morgan scored a 5-2 decision against Alex Maus.
After Morgan's decision, the Mavericks would reel off five straight pins, beginning with Dominguez' pin of TSU's Steve Kuent in 2:02. At 157 pounds, Sigman made the most out of his dual debut pinning Chad Griesemer in 2:40. The redshirt freshman is now 18-10 this season after competing in open tournaments the majority of the year.
Denson tallied UNO's only other pin in under one minute in the 165-pound match. The 2008 All-American pinned TSU's Andrew Isbell in just 36 seconds. Taplin tabbed his second pin in the MIAA duals at 174 pounds. The senior pinned Jeff Graber in 1:15 to improve his record to 34-7 this season. Pankoke recorded UNO's final pin in the dual. The 184-pound senior tallied his pin in 1:35.
After the Mavericks forfeited the match at 197 pounds, Tony Lewis scored a 7-3 decision against Bulldogs' Andy Swedenhjelm in the final match at 285 pounds.
Ryan Pankoke (165) and Bryce Boehm (285) both competed in exhibition matches against TSU with both Maverick wrestlers winning by technical fall. Pankoke defeated J.C. Housley, 16-1, while Boehm won 19-1 over Loyde Braidlow.
